Resurfacing means putting a new wearing surface on a slab that is structurally fine but looks and feels finished. It is not the same as a repair, and it is not the same as a coating, although the three words get used as if they were one thing.
The four jobs people call resurfacing
Patching. Filling individual cracks, pits and spalled edges. Cheapest. Fixes the hole, does nothing for the rest of the floor, and the patch will not match.
Grinding. Taking the top layer off with diamond tooling to get back to sound, flat, open concrete. On its own it leaves you with bare ground concrete, which looks better than it did and still stains like concrete.
An overlay. A cement based layer troweled over the old slab to give a new flat surface. This is resurfacing in the strict sense. It is the right answer when the slab is badly out of level or the surface has broken down over a wide area.
A coating. Grinding, then repairing, then building a bonded finish on top. This is what most people searching for garage floor resurfacing actually want, because they want the floor to stop being a problem, not just to be flat.
How to tell which one your slab needs
Pour a cup of water on the worst area. If it beads and sits, there is an old sealer or coating on top and that has to come off first. If it soaks straight in, the concrete is open and will bond to a coating.
Look at the cracks. Hairline cracks that you can barely catch a fingernail in are shrinkage cracks. Every slab has them and they get repaired as part of a normal coating job. A crack you can fit a coin into, or one where one side sits higher than the other, is a movement crack, and that is a different conversation.
Scrape a corner with a screwdriver. If the surface crumbles to sand under light pressure over a wide area, the top of the slab has broken down and an overlay is the honest answer. If it takes real effort, the slab is sound.

What garage floor resurfacing costs
Patching a few cracks yourself is a bag of product and an afternoon. Call it under a hundred dollars and accept that it will be visible.
A full coated floor, which is grinding plus crack repair plus the finish, runs about $5 to $12 per square foot installed. For a two car garage that is most commonly $1,595 to $4,337, with $2,441 being the national average. A cement overlay sits between the two and is very slab dependent, because the cost is driven by how much material it takes to get the floor flat. Anyone quoting an overlay without walking the slab is guessing.
What resurfacing will not fix
It will not fix water coming up through the slab. A new surface over a wet slab fails, and it fails in a way that looks like a product problem when it is a water problem. We do not install over moisture. We let it dry first, and if there is a leak somewhere it gets fixed before we come back.
It will not fix a slab that is moving. If one side of a crack is rising, something underneath is causing it, and surfacing over the top just moves the crack up into the new layer.
It will not make a floor with no fall drain. Resurfacing follows the shape of what is already there unless you are paying for an overlay specifically to change it.
Is it worth doing at all?
A resurfaced and coated garage floor stops dusting, stops soaking up oil, sweeps and mops instead of being hosed, and normally runs 15 to 20 years. Ours is backed by a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the home.

Common questions about resurfacing
Can I resurface over an old epoxy garage floor? Not over the top of it. The old coating comes off first, by grinding. Putting anything over a failing epoxy floor inherits its bond, which is the bond that already failed. There are signs to look for in 4 signs it is time to remove your epoxy coating.
How long does it take? Most residential garages are a single visit. Bigger repairs add a day because the repair has to set before anything goes over it.
Do I have to empty the garage? Yes. The floor has to be ground corner to corner, and the machine needs the walls.
